Your attitude can be affected by what happened to you after you had your stroke. Did your outlook stay the same with a fixed mindset? Did you make this change in your situation with curiosity? Did your attitude take a dive for the depths? What are your attitude has responded to your stroke will have far-ranging consequences.
Mindset is a term that has been around since the early 1900s to describe how people think, have certain opinions, and adopt certain behaviors. From the book “Limitless,” author Jim Kwik defines mindset as the “set of assumptions and attitudes on what you believe is possible, what you believe you deserve, what you believe you are capable of, and what you believe is in your power. Wow, that is powerful if you believe his meaning. From the Merriam-Webster dictionary, mindset is defined as a mental attitude or inclination or a fixed state of mind. The beliefs determine your attitude and your life. Your mindset plays a critical role in how you cope with life’s challenges, like a stroke!
Around 2010, people started hearing about mindset in the news. It was because of a researcher named Carole Dweck. She and her team dissected the concept in people. The reason why mindset matters is that if you have either a fixed way or a growth way of thinking. If you do not grow, develop and create, you are stuck and have more difficulty solving bigger issues. If taking on new issues, you are challenged and explore new ways to tackle these new issues.
You can stretch her findings to your mindset. Is it a fixed or a growth mindset? It makes a difference because you have been left with lots of baggage from the stroke. You can unpack it or keep lugging it month by month, year by year. You may not know that you have a choice, but you do. Our habits kick in with everything we do; including our mindset. In time you need to step back and examine your mindset and your habits. Your answer will determine how you proceed forward!
