Supplements to our normal diet are essential!

I wished I was taking at least 1000 mg of fish oil daily. I do now and started taking it religiously around seven years ago. The reason I take fish oil is that it has some anti-inflammatory benefits. Inflammation can be bad if it is in the wrong place, if it is for too long, or if it happens more than normal.

In one study, researchers found the fish oil supplementation increased the level of the anti-inflammatory molecules and they do supercharge macrophages, specialized cells that destroy bacteria and eliminate dead cells. They also make platelets less sticky, potentially decreasing the formation of blood clots. The molecules also have been shown to play a role in tissue regeneration. Fish oils have shown benefits when you have an ischemic stroke. That is the kind of strokes I had.

There are key components of omega-3 fatty acids that make up fish oil. They are critical for healthy brains. While omega-3s are not vitamins, they still should be on our diet for their positive effects on stroke recovery. DHA, one of the components of omega-3 fatty acids, is essential for brain growth in infants and maintenance of normal brain function in adults. Some studies suggest that DHA can reduce stroke risk factors like hypertension and atherosclerosis.

Do you take fish oil daily? Fish oil is a natural anticoagulant, which means it can prevent blood from clotting. Omega-3s may increase bleeding risk when a person takes them with a specific anticoagulant or medication. Talk with your doctor before adding any supplements like fish oil. Our grandparents and parents didn’t consume many, if all, supplements. Now, we know that our soils and our waters are getting depleted of essential nutrients which are provided by additions to our normal food. Supplements, like fish oil, are important to add to the diets we eat.
